Located on the upper level of our museum building is our Portrait Gallery.

Before photography became common to all households, itinerant portrait painters travelled around.  Some were quite talented and have become famous.  Our portrait gallery includes a portrait by Thomas LeClere, who went on to paint several portraits of U.S. Presidents that hang in the National Capitol in Washington.  Also in our gallery is a portrait painted by Susan Waters, who was one of a very small number of female folk artists.   Prominent families of Tioga County are represented in our gallery as well, like the portraits of James Pumpelly and his wife, who built and lived in the mansion that provided the doorway noted on our Permanent Collection page.
